Results are based on extensive academic papers and expert opinions of over 240,000 academics and employers. The following are the Top 15 universities according to the QS Survey 2024: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) United States. The Academic Reputation Survey 2024, available in 12 languages, will be distributed by THE and use benchmark data as a guide to ensure that the response coverage is as representative of world scholarship as possible. The RUR Reputation ranking is entirely based on special reputational data survey run by Clarivate Analytics annually via its Academic Reputation Survey.

In this year’s QS rankings, U of T dipped from its ranking of 26th in 2022. Changes to THE’s university ranks next year. Last year, Elsevier carried out the Global Academic Reputation Survey, which is different from the reputation survey conducted for the research category. The methodology used by QS World University Ranking consists of 5 key ranking factors, each one with different weightings. Academic reputation, which is obtained by surveying academics worldwide, has the most weight (40%). Rankings Explained: The top 4 global university rankings every student should know
QS runs an extensive filtering process to identify and discard responses of this nature. It is well documented on the basis of other high-profile surveys in higher education that universities are not above attempting to get respondents to answer in a certain fashion. QS run a number of processes to screen for any manipulation of survey responses.
But individual subject rankings mean the departments have now become part of this game. So how do schools like La Trobe cope with this problem? Will top programmes at lesser-known universities like QUT and Otago ever be able to overtake their alpha counterparts in university subject rankings? Perhaps La Trobe, in a recent faculty restructuring dispute , and Otago, who outspent all of its NZ counterparts in advertising last year, may already be hard at work on this issue.

The ranking is much more prominent in mainland Europe than in the Anglophone world, Asia or Latin America. To some extent, this is reflected in the distribution of votes given see below. Methodology 10,928 employers were surveyed in 23 countries between July and September of 2021. They were asked to name up to 10 institutions. In addition to the education quality and other facilities offered, HKU has encouraged me to learn beyond the scope of the classroom. To me personally, extracurricular activities and relevant experience are must-haves to successfully initiate a career in Hong Kong. The fact that it constantly exposes its students to valuable opportunities is my main reason for choosing HKU. During my first two years of university I participated in multiple case competitions, both local and international, most of which were introduced and fully funded by HKU Business School.

Top International Institutions Respondents are asked to identify up to thirty international institutions they consider best for research in each of the faculty areas selected in Section 2. The list consists solely of institutions from the region s with which they express familiarity in section 2.
Additional Information We use this section to gather additional information from respondents, such as feedback on previous publications and the importance of various measures in evaluating universities. Response Processing The work is not done once the survey is designed and delivered. Once the responses are received a number of steps are taken to ensure the validity of the sample.

The QS World University Rankings are extremely significant for international student recruitment, particularly in markets such as China and the Middle East. Being placed as a top 100 world university and 17th in the UK is also significant for the university being eligible for international government-sponsored bursaries for students.
The QS World University Rankings for 2024 was the largest ever, taking in 1,500 universities across 104 locations, and assessing the distribution and performance of 17. The rankings also take in the expert opinions of more than 144,000 academic faculty and 98,000 employers around the world. Also look out for communications from your school or department asking for academic and employer contacts you may wish to nominate to take part in the QS surveys.
The inappropriateness of the summary tabulations for assessing the majority of the "top 200" universities would be apparent purely for reason of this obvious statistical instability regardless of other grounds of criticism. There are far too many anomalies in the change scores of the various indices for them to be of use in the course of university management. The results are based on an entirely flawed methodology that underweights the quality of research and overweights fluff... The QS is a flawed index and should be ignored. From the beginning, the QS has relied on reputational indicators for half of its analysis … it probably accounts for the significant variability in the QS rankings over the years. In addition, QS queries employers, introducing even more variability and unreliability into the mix. Whether the QS rankings should be taken seriously by the higher education community is questionable.
QS denied the possibility and stated that it had firm policies and practices to minimize potential conflicts of interest.

Ruth’s Rankings 40: Deconstructing QS Subjects and Surveys
Other commentators have pointed at the low validity of the survey, since few people know much about the quality of teaching and research at other institutions but their own. Some people have expressed concern about the manner in which the academic reputation survey has been carried out. Staff are likely to feel it is in their greatest interest to rank their own institution more highly than others. This means the results of the survey and any apparent change in ranking are highly questionable, and that a high ranking has no real intrinsic value in any case. We are vehemently opposed to the evaluation of the University according to the outcome of such PR competitions. Like many other international university rankings, QS uses a citation database to calculate some of its indicators. The use of these citations databases have been criticised, since they do not include research output from the humanities and social sciences to the same degree as the natural sciences, engineering and medicine.
